Pascual won the ‘Alexander Gomelskiy Coach of the Year’ award for best coach in the competition after leading his team to a 10-0 balance in the Regular Phase, 5-1 in the ‘Top 16’, a 3 -1 against Real Madrid in the ‘Playoffs’ and two victories in the ‘Final Four’ in Paris-Bercy; for a 20-2 aggregate in the Euroleague. "I remember once with Ettore we had a conversation and he said to me: ‘Okay, now in Barcelona everything is perfect for you, but you will really feel like a great coach when you leave your country and win something. In that moment, you will really feel: ‘Okay, I’m a great coach.’ And really, he was right", recognized Pascual, who went to Panathinaikos (two Leagues and a Cup) and, in February of this year, he took Zenit de Saint Petersburg after the cessation of Joan Plaza.
Reaching that top, located on that beautiful page in the Blaugrana color in the future historical book of the competition, was not easy for the Catalan coach. He wanted to make a career in engineering but, paying attention to his surroundings, he took a turn in his life to dedicate himself completely to being a basketball coach.
"I am a coach because I need to feel every day that I am part of the game, that I can help my players, that I can help my team win. And after that, feeling like the work we did was good", Gavà’s technician was honest.
For Pascual, the special thing about basketball is having a rival in front of you that you have studied to win. "I have two, three or four days to prepare. I start to watch games and feel what I can do, how I can help my players win. It is something that is within me. When I think ‘Okay, this is the way, this way we can probably win’, that’s why I’m a coach"he explained.
And, starting from the base and going through CB Gavà, Cornellà, CB Santfeliuenc, CB Olesa and CB Aracena, he arrived at the Barça subsidiary in 2004 and after being an assistant in the first team he took over the reins, provisionally in initially, when Dusko Ivanovic was sacked in the middle of the 2007/08 season.
