Multiple factors such as limited access to health care, legal status and income increase the risk of developing preventable health conditions because many undocumented immigrants postpone routine visits to the doctor until they become seriously ill. Screening mammograms are the leading method of identifying early breast cancer. According to a National Cancer Society Survey, only 61 percent of Hispanic/Latina women over age 40 reported having a screening mammogram in the two years prior to the survey, compared to 65 percent of white women. Every year, The Latina Center coordinates the Latina Legislative Day offering Latina women from throughout the Bay Area an opportunity to visit Sacramento. Women walk the halls of the State Capitol meeting with California legislators and Latina/o leaders.
