Sure a lot of the message in this movie is from the whole philosophy class discussion of the “brain in a vat” scenario. Or how do really know what is real if all we depend upon is our senses. But this was a hell of a lot more entertaining than philosophy class. The rise of, and dependence upon, technology in our society can be wholly forgiven if it leaves gems like this in its wake. This film truly took advantage of all the technological assets it had. I have grown weary, like many others, of the cookie cutter action films that have come out of hollywood as of late. Where two movies about asteroids cane come out within a month of each other. This movie was a breath of fresh air. It was visually impressive, the story line moved along at a good pace, and the martial arts scenes were done with an element of humour that complimented the movie well.
Something that really surprised me was Keanu. Normally any movie he is in is destined to make him look like an untalented slack-jawed boob. “you have a gun pointed at your head, what do you do, what do you do? This time I felt he was very appropriately casted for this part, where being a slack-jawed boob made his character that much more plausible, and at least removed the untalented part of his description. All in all I highly recommend this movie to anyone. Art-film buffs, guys who like action flicks, normal movie goers, etc, will all find something to like in this movie. 1/2 out of. 3 1/2 out of 4.

First off, The Matrix was one of the better movies I have seen in a while. The effects are amazing, and the premise of hope in a hopeless world is inspiring. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, rent the widescreen version if at all possible, and try to watch the movie on the largest screen possible.
That having been said, The Matrix in some ways is like Tron meets Wild Palms. And if you get down to it, most “Technology replacing Man” themes comes from Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein.
